About this board game

The Siege of Alesia: Gaul, 52 B.C. is a two-player hex-and-counter wargame with an approximate play time of 300 minutes. Ten Roman legions besiege a Gallic force inside Alesia while a second Gallic force arrives to besiege the Romans in their own siege works.

As Volume XI in GMT Games’ Great Battles of History series, the game uses mechanics similar to those found in other titles in the series. Its focus on a siege rather than a more traditional set-piece battle gives the game a distinctive structure and requires more changes to the standard GBoH rules than other volumes in the series.

Instead of using specific turns, play passes back and forth between the two sides. This alternating flow can be interrupted by the abilities of opposing commanders, creating a battle in which command decisions affect when the action shifts between the besieged forces, the besiegers, and the relieving army.

The three included scenarios offer different ways to approach the conflict while keeping the central siege situation at the heart of play. The Siege of Alesia presents the Roman and Gallic forces in a rare confrontation shaped by fortifications, encirclement, and the pressure of a relieving force.
