Red Typhoon: The Soviet Winter Counter-Offensive, 1942 is a two-player wargame with a 420-minute play time, simulating the early 1942 Russian counter-offensive in front of Moscow.

One player commands the Soviet forces, seeking to complete the destruction of Army Group Center. The other takes the German side, attempting to survive the Soviet onslaught by skillfully plugging breakthroughs and launching counterattacks when the situation allows.

Red Typhoon uses an IGO-UGO turn sequence, with activation points controlling the movement and attacks of each formation. Deciding how to spend those activations is the game’s central challenge: some units may not move or attack, some may only move or attack, and others may do both.

• Manage activation points across your formations.
• Exploit retreats chosen by the attacking player.
• Use disruption to turn successful combat into further advantage.
• Handle special rules for German panzers, Soviet airborne forces, and partisans.

Combat follows a fairly traditional framework, but the added effects of attacker-directed retreats and disrupted retreating units create important tactical consequences. Players who understand how to exploit both factors will be better positioned to achieve their objectives.

The game begins with several large Soviet breakthroughs, immediately placing pressure on the German player. Whether those advances become the destruction of Army Group Center or are contained through careful defense and selective counterattack depends on the choices made throughout the battle.

Red Typhoon is a redesign by Revolution Games of the fourth game in the PANZER KORPS series. It was first published as Panzer Korps 04: Red Typhoon in Command Magazine Japan #85, published in March–April 2009.
