About this board game

Tonari is a 2–4 player fishing game with an approximately 45-minute play time, set on the small island of Kuchinoshima after a terrible storm.

The village has only one fishing boat left, and every player hopes to prove themselves the island’s best fisherman. On your turn, move the boat marker around the island and collect any fish tiles you land upon. Each decision contributes to your haul as the boat travels from one location to the next.

At the end of the day, players compare their collected fish and determine who has the best haul. However, Tonari adds an unusual twist when three or four people play: each player’s score is added to the score of the player to their right before the winner is determined.

  • Players: 2–4
  • Play time: 45 minutes
  • Setting: The storm-struck island of Kuchinoshima
  • Core activity: Move the boat marker and collect fish tiles

This scoring rule makes the final results especially distinctive in larger games. Your own haul matters, but so does the score connected to the player on your right, creating a different end-of-day calculation for three or four players than for a two-player game.

Released in 2019, Tonari presents a focused competition built around one shared fishing boat, fish-tile collection, and a memorable scoring system. For players looking for a compact island-themed game with a clear objective and an unexpected final twist, it offers a direct contest to become Kuchinoshima’s best fisherman.
