About this board game

Valknut is a 2020 Viking-themed strategy game for 2–4 players, with games lasting about 15 minutes. It offers a modern take on the classic Viking game hnefatafl, challenging opposing factions to eliminate one another through careful positioning and flanking.

Each player assumes the role of an asymmetric faction, giving the conflict a distinct character on each side. The central objective is direct: surround and eliminate enemy units while protecting your own forces from the same fate.

Rather than fighting on a completely fixed board, the battleground is built as the game progresses. Battleground cards are placed during play, gradually shaping the space in which the factions maneuver. This developing battlefield adds variety from one game to the next and supports the game’s emphasis on replayability.

Most battles are decided by the complete elimination of one team. If the last Battleground card is placed while both sides still have units remaining, the game uses points to determine the winner instead.
