The Great Space Race

About this board game

The Great Space Race is a space-racing board game for 3–6 players, with an average play time of 180 minutes. Players pilot starships around a hex-based track, competing to be the first to complete three laps.

The Great Galactic Emperor has decreed that the race must go ahead, and each player represents a species whose survival depends on victory. Along the way, racers must navigate minefields, asteroids, wormholes, black holes and other players’ ships—while staying away from the dreaded Space Amoeba.

The game includes a track, ships, counters and three separate decks of cards. These components combine to create a hazardous route where every movement can bring a new obstacle or a chance to gain ground.

• Simultaneous selection of movement cards
• A hex-based racing track
• Obstacles including mines, asteroids, black holes and wormholes
• Special movement combinations such as the Barrel Roll, Dragon’s Tail and Broken Arrow

Movement is handled through cards that offer much more than straightforward forward travel. They combine forward movement, sliding and turning into distinctive maneuvers, creating a system that differs from the movement cards in RoboRally.

An average three-lap game can last around three hours, but the number of laps can be changed to adjust the length of the race. Whether players are threading through hazards or avoiding rival ships, The Great Space Race puts the fate of an entire species behind every move.

The game re-implements The Great Space Drag Race and was released in 2006.
