About this board game
Bus is a board game for 3–5 players, with play lasting about 120 minutes, in which players deliver as many people as possible to their destinations. First released in 1999, it challenges you to build connected bus routes and respond to the changing rhythm of city life.
Players begin with one bus and can acquire more, extend their routes, bring new passengers into the city through the trains, add buildings, and run their buses. Passenger destinations vary from turn to turn between work, bar, and home, so a route that is useful now may be less valuable later. Each additional bus lets you carry one more passenger whenever you run your buses, potentially increasing your score.
Routes grow from either end of an initial Settlers-style placement. Extensions are added to the ends, while parallel routes are restricted by empty streets and the position of another player’s route. With new passengers arriving at one of two train stations, route placement requires careful planning.
- Build routes that connect passengers with changing destinations.
- Expand your fleet to carry more passengers on each bus run.
- Add buildings while considering how their types affect existing routes.
- Use the action board to time expansion, construction, buses, and the clock.
The action board gives Bus an especially sharp timing dilemma: for some actions, the first player to select the action performs it last. This creates tense contests and painful decisions over when to commit. Building can also disrupt opponents by placing building types at their intersections, encouraging passengers to walk instead of boarding.
To succeed in Bus, you must watch the city, anticipate passenger movement, and prepare your network for the next turn. The result is a tightly interactive challenge of route building, timing, and opportunistic bus operations.
