About this board game
White Death: Velikiye Luki, The Stalingrad of the North is a two-player simulation of the Battle of Velikiye Luki, with a listed play time of 240 minutes and a 1979 release year.
The game opens with the massive Soviet offensive of the winter campaign of 1942–1943. The Red Army’s Kalinin Front seeks to encircle Velikiye Luki and liberate the city from the Wehrmacht’s 3rd Panzer Army, as part of the northern pincer of the Rzhev-Sychevka Strategic Offensive Operation, also known as Operation Mars.
At the heart of the design is an impulse turn system developed by Frank Chadwick. This system was later adopted in games including Korsun Pocket and Black Sea Black Death. The game is complex and intended for experienced gamers who enjoy detailed historical simulations.
Six scenarios explore the battle, while the compact scale keeps the focus on operational decisions across the frozen battlefield:
- Game turn: 5 days
- Map scale: 1 mile / 1.6 kilometers per hex
- Unit scale: company to regiment
The original GDW edition included a 22 × 28-inch map, two double-sided countersheets containing 480 half-inch counters, a 20-page rules booklet, organization charts, order-of-appearance and terrain-effects charts, a turn record and terrain chart, and a six-sided die.
White Death was republished in Command Magazine Japan #96 in 2010, with an A1-size map, 560 half-inch counters including 10 blanks, a 24-page rule booklet, order-of-appearance charts, and a combat tables chart.
