About this board game

City Square Off is a two-player city-building game that takes about 15 minutes to play. Each player designs a city on a personal 9×9 playing area, beginning with a different cityscape starter tile positioned in the middle of the grid.

Both players have a set of 21 city tiles. On each turn, one player turns over a shape card showing a Tetris-style arrangement of squares. The arrangement matches one of the city tiles, and both players simultaneously add that matching tile to their own city.

Every tile must be placed with at least one edge adjacent to the starter tile or to another tile already in play. This simple placement rule creates a shared challenge: build outward across the available space while keeping the city within its 9×9 boundary.

  • Two players compete at the same time.
  • Each player uses a 9×9 playing area and 21 city tiles.
  • Shape cards determine which Tetris-style tile is added.
  • Tiles must connect edge-to-edge with the existing city.

If a player would be forced to place a tile outside the grid, that player loses. When both players would lose on the same turn, the player with the largest contiguous group of open spaces becomes the master city planner and wins.

Released in 2011, City Square Off combines simultaneous play, spatial placement, and a clear boundary-based objective in a compact contest. Every revealed shape card asks both players to respond with the same available form while managing the space remaining in their own city.
