About this board game
Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures Game (Second Edition) is a two-player tactical battle game played on a battle map, with sessions lasting about 60 minutes. Each player assembles a warband of miniatures and pits it against an opponent’s force.
A typical warband is worth 200 points and can contain a maximum of 10 models. Every miniature has its own characteristics and points value, giving players a structured way to build their force before the battle begins.
The second edition revises and streamlines the mechanics while retaining the overall structure of the original game. It also updates the miniatures game to correspond with the transition from third-edition to fourth-edition Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying rules.
Warband construction is based on factions rather than alignment. Each model belongs to one or more of four factions, and every model in a warband must share at least one faction with the others. Alignment is simplified as well: only models considered absolutely Good or Evil receive an alignment.
- Champions replace the commanders from the first edition.
- Models no longer make morale checks or rout.
- A model reduced to half damage becomes bloodied, potentially triggering special game effects.
The game’s releases include Dungeons of Dread, Against the Giants, and Demonweb. Each set contains 60 figures, with eight random figures in each pack; Against the Giants includes huge figures. A planned fourth set, Feywild, was announced but not released.
The starter set includes a rulebook, five fixed models with stat cards, damage counters, a twenty-sided die, and two double-sided battle maps. Wizards of the Coast also revised stat cards from 11 first-edition sets for compatibility with this version.
