About this board game
Moon Base is a two-player abstract strategy game about developing the Moon, played over six rounds in approximately 60 minutes. Players build a shared lunar base by placing and stacking ring modules across a board of overlapping craters.
Each round, the available Ring Module is replenished and players take turns placing one ring at a time. Rings can form structures of two or three layers, making every position important: placing a ring in one crater can eliminate a ring in an overlapping crater, and the reverse is also true.
The ring modules come in three colors, and players use them to advance their own color and gain the upper hand. Although the modules are prepared randomly, all available rings are revealed, so decisions depend on reading the board, anticipating future rounds, and judging which option will best limit an opponent’s plans.
- Overlapping craters: Occupying one crater can affect another, creating a changing tactical landscape.
- Three-dimensional construction: Stack rings into two- or three-layer formations as the base develops.
- Strategic timing: Specific craters are first come, first served, so acting early can matter.
- Endgame tension: Bonus points depend on the situation at the end of the sixth round.
At the end of each round, players score for constructing residential zones and resource facilities. They also consider how effectively to move the mobile research building while pursuing additional opportunities for points.
As the sixth round approaches, the completed lunar base becomes both the result of the contest and a record of the players’ choices. In Moon Base, an unexpected placement can change the balance, making careful planning and late-game tactical moves essential to finishing with the highest total score.
