About this board game

Caretos is a strategic board game for 2–4 players with a playing time of about 60 minutes, set in the haunted mountains of northern Portugal.

In an imaginary triangle between the Gerês, Marão, and Montesinho Mountains, a rugged granite wilderness becomes a hunting ground after dark. Supernatural creatures such as witches, werewolves, and the devilish Caretos are said to roam this remote region.

Each player controls a team of two Portuguese monsters. Your goal is to scare and capture more villagers than your opponents. Villagers gather in villages and chapels across the map, creating groups that can be dispersed or isolated targets that can be captured.

  • Activate one of your monsters on your turn.
  • Move to scare and disperse groups of villagers.
  • Capture villagers who have been left isolated.
  • Use the energies of the night to determine movement and special abilities.
  • Activate neutral Caretos to block or even capture other players.

The Caretos are a gang of jokers: possessed villagers who operate as neutral creatures on the map. Their ability to interfere with rival monsters adds another challenge as players compete for the region’s villagers.

Released in 2020, Caretos combines nighttime movement, monster abilities, village groups, and shifting interference from neutral creatures. Plan each activation carefully as you pursue villagers and try to claim the highest number before your opponents can do the same.
