About this board game
Sutter’s Mill is a board game for 2–4 players, with a playing time of about 60 minutes, that recreates the rise and decline of Coloma during California’s Gold Rush of 1849.
At the start, the town is ready to grow. Players work through a build-up phase, developing Coloma, bringing new citizens into the town, and digging for gold as they seek profit from the rush.
- Build up the town of Coloma
- Bring new citizens into the growing settlement
- Dig gold while the vein still holds value
- Choose when to shift from building up to tearing down
The game’s central tension comes from its two-part structure. After building up, each player eventually enters a tear-down phase, taking apart what has been established and preparing to leave before the opportunity disappears.
That change is not triggered for everyone at once. Each player decides independently when there is no more profit to be had, creating a shifting game in which some players may already be tearing down Coloma while others continue building and digging.
Timing is crucial: leave too soon, and more profit may remain; wait too long, and the gold vein may be almost spent. In Sutter’s Mill, the California Gold Rush is a brief opportunity to develop a town, claim its riches, and get out before the decline takes hold.
Released in 2008, Sutter’s Mill offers a focused gold-rush experience built around changing priorities and personal timing. The town’s rise and fall unfold through the decisions of the players themselves.
