About this board game

Field Command is a two-player board game with an approximately 180-minute play time, placing two armies against each other on an 11×11 battlefield. Each player commands 40 units and aims to remove the opposing player’s general from the battlefield.

Every army includes a combination of distinct unit types, giving the battlefield a varied mix of capabilities. Cavalry and infantry are divided into three ranks, represented by a triangle, circle, or square.

  • Artillery
  • Cavalry with three ranks
  • Infantry with three ranks
  • A General
  • Guerillas

The battlefield contains forests and plains arranged across three levels of elevation. These terrain features matter when opposing units clash, adding positional considerations to the movement and battle systems.

During each turn, players may move up to 12 units, and movement is simultaneous. Rather than moving one army completely before the other responds, both players’ movements unfold together, creating a contest of timing and positioning across the grid.

When units meet, combat is resolved through a rock-paper-scissors system. The result is modified by both a unit’s rank and the terrain where the battle takes place, so the battlefield’s forests, plains, and elevation levels all contribute to the outcome.

With its large grid, 40-unit armies, simultaneous movement, and rank-based combat, Field Command focuses on coordinating an entire force while protecting the key general. Victory comes when the opposing general is removed from play.
