About this board game

Fall Blau: Army Group South, June to December 1942 is a two-player-plus simulation for 1–6 players, covering the 1942 campaigns to capture the Caucasus and Stalingrad. A full game can take up to 420 minutes, while smaller scenarios offer shorter playing times.

The game uses a modified version of the classic Operation Typhoon / Victory in the West system. Turns follow a familiar IGO-UGO sequence of movement and combat, with mechanized units able to make possible attacks during movement. Strong units use a chit pull to determine their strength when entering combat, adding uncertainty to key engagements.

Supply is central to the Axis challenge. A support system can restrict the Axis player from having enough strength to attack everywhere at once, while simplified aircraft rules represent air power through Air Points. Automatic victory goals based on Hitler’s whim provide another strategic pressure.

  • Game turns represent three days, with hexes covering 6.5 miles / 10 kilometers.
  • Units range from battalions to divisions, including Soviet corps, brigades, and tank battalions.
  • Five maps extend from Kursk in the north toward Baku in the south, with a sixth map for three smaller scenarios using larger hexes.
  • Free setup options and optional German divisions support varied approaches to the campaign.

Players can also choose whether the Eleventh Armee remains available for the drive toward the oilfields rather than going to Leningrad. With high solitaire playability, medium complexity, and scenarios that break the campaign into smaller battles, Fall Blau offers a flexible operational study of Army Group South’s 1942 offensive.
