About this board game
Ramparts is a 2–4-player medieval strategy game with an approximate play time of 60 minutes, first released in 1993.
Set in the medieval City of Towers, Ramparts places each player in the role of one of four power-hungry nobles. Every family seeks to control the most powerful tower—or, better still, several towers—while competing for scarce raw materials.
Each player has 20 counters, marked with one of four different symbols. Counters move around the board to form towers, and completed towers can then be moved into the city’s scoring locations. The position of a tower and the counter visible at its top are central to the game’s scoring system.
- Move counters around the board to assemble towers.
- Move towers into scoring locations.
- Raid rival stocks as families compete for limited raw materials.
- Score for every counter in a stack when your counter is on top.
Because the top counter determines which player scores for the entire stack, building and positioning towers are closely connected. A single tower can contain counters belonging to different players, creating a direct contest over control and points.
Play ends when a player has no legal moves, or when any one district of the city reaches its capacity of eight towers. These conditions give the game a defined conclusion as players develop their towers and move them toward valuable locations.
With its focus on stacking, movement, shared towers, and contested scoring locations, Ramparts offers a compact struggle for influence across the City of Towers.
