About this board game
Soccer City is a turn-based football board game for two players, with an approximate playing time of 180 minutes. Inspired by early twentieth-century football, it combines a retro look with a detailed card-driven simulation of the sport.
Players alternate between attacking and defending turns, using cards to represent the events and actions of a match. Passing, player advancement, dribbling, fouls, tactical decisions, shots on goal, goalkeeper saves, and outside influences all form part of the game’s football-focused system.
An attacking turn contains four sequential phases. The attacking player may choose whether to play each phase or pass to the next, creating room for decisions throughout the possession:
- Ball passing or player advancing
- Attacking or tactical action
- Shot on goal
- Team repositioning
Once the attacking turn ends, the defending player takes a turn with two phases: a defensive or tactical action, followed by team repositioning. Each player has Ball cards, Offensive cards, Defensive cards, and Shot-on-Goal cards to support these turns.
The full game includes a 40 × 68 cm board, two teams of 11 players, a referee die, two tactical pads, and a score component. Its six decks contain 165 cards in total:
- 25 Offensive Action cards
- 25 Defensive Action cards
- 25 Shot-on-Goal cards
- 25 Goalkeeper Save cards
- 48 Ball Playing cards
- 17 External Factors cards
With its structured turns, broad range of football actions, and striking design by illustrator Jorge Consuegra, Soccer City offers an expansive tabletop recreation of a complete football match.
