About this board game

Arena Rex is a tabletop miniatures game of gladiatorial combat for 2–4 players, with battles taking approximately 30 minutes. Players command combatants in the arena, where maneuver, terrain, and timing create constantly changing tactical choices.

Recommended battles feature 3 to 8 combatants per side. The rules are designed to be simple and intuitive, while offering myriad tactical possibilities as warriors face one another across the sands.

A fatigue-based activation system gives Arena Rex a distinctive rhythm. Rather than relying on a traditional round structure, the game uses fatigue to twist the flow of activation, making decisions about when to act an important part of the battle.

  • Gladiatorial combat: Fight for freedom, riches, and eternal glory.
  • Meaningful maneuver: Use positioning and arena terrain to shape the contest.
  • Fatigue-based activation: Experience a dynamic alternative to a traditional round structure.
  • Mythic antiquity: Encounter men, beasts, and creatures of myth in a world inspired by the most exciting eras of antiquity.

The setting is Rome in 1253 AUC, but this is not the world you know. The Roman Republic and the Gallo-Roman Empire endure, while Aegyptus remains a tributary of the Roman Republic, ruled directly by an Antonian king and a Ptolemaic queen.

The Atlantic is no longer the barrier it once was, bringing men from the twilight lands of the north and natives of the far west into commerce and warfare. Myth, hearsay, and superstition shape this familiar yet incredible world, where every arena battle can become a struggle for the crowd’s favor and eternal glory.
