About this board game
Alba Longa is a board game for 2–5 players, with games lasting around 90 minutes. Set in early Italy in 600 BCE, it challenges each player to lead one of five competing city states toward becoming a glorious power of the Ancient World.
Choose Roma, Velletri, Reate, Veii, or Alba Longa, each representing a different people of the region. Your goal is to be the first city state to reach 16 or more population and 10 monuments.
Alba Longa combines several interlocking systems. Players make decisions through dice selection, manage their city, and assign workers within their own city. The competition is sharpened by city combat, where soldiers and heroes add a direct and contentious element to the struggle for superiority.
- Dice selection and city management
- Worker assignment inside your own city
- City combat involving soldiers and heroes
- A race to achieve 16+ population and 10 monuments
The box includes three major variants: Assisi, A Job Well Done, and Spoils of War. They can be added and combined as you choose, offering additional ways to play and extending the game’s longevity.
Originally developed in prototype form as The Great Pyramid, the design was one of four winners of the 2009 Concours International de Créateurs de Jeux de Société, a competition run by Centre National du Jeu in France. The jury praised its many possible strategies, clear overall mechanism, numerous choices, and unusually contentious interaction.
Released in 2011, Alba Longa offers a substantial contest of development, planning, and rivalry among the city states of early Italy.
