About this board game

Hypergrid is a two-player abstract strategy game that takes about 60 minutes to play and challenges players aged 7 and up. Across roughly 16 turns per player, opponents build colorful stacks on a compact 3×3 grid, seeking to create more scoring lines than their rival.

Each player has six chips in each of five elements. On every turn, a player places exactly two tokens, then combines their effects to shape the developing grid. A line scores when it is newly created with three chips of the same element, making every placement part of a wider tactical contest.

Hypergrid uses just three principles and five special effects, offering a strategic challenge with fewer rules than chess while opening up plenty of possibilities to explore. When an element is placed on top of at least two chips, its elemental effect can be used, adding another layer to the decisions surrounding each stack.

  • Players: 2
  • Play time: about 60 minutes
  • Grid: 3×3 with colorful stacks
  • Scoring: newly created lines of three matching elements
  • Style: action-driven, no luck, and focused on sandbox tactics

The game continues until a player can no longer place a chip. The player with the most points wins, turning the final state of the grid into the result of a battle of wits rather than chance.

The set includes a play-mat, 65 chips in five colours, 9+2 six-sided dice, two quick reference cards, and a user’s guide. With its small grid, layered stacks, and elemental effects, Hypergrid presents a concise yet deeply tactical abstract game for two players.
