About this board game
Escalation! is a fast card game for 2–6 players that takes about 15 minutes to play. Players compete to collect as few cards as possible while repeatedly trying to surpass the total called by the previous player.
Each player begins with six cards. The deck includes cards numbered 1–13, three jokers that can be worth 1–7, and two “pass” cards. On a turn, the active player plays either a single card or multiple cards with the same value, then announces the sum of the cards played.
The next player must escalate by playing cards that surpass that sum. If they cannot—or choose not to do so—they collect all the cards played so far. That player then opens the next sequence with one or more cards, creating a constant tension between making a stronger play and taking on the growing pile.
- Play with 2–6 players.
- Games take about 15 minutes.
- Use single cards or sets of cards with the same value.
- Jokers can be worth 1–7.
- Try to finish with as few collected cards as possible.
As soon as one player runs out of cards, every other player adds their remaining hand to the cards they have collected and tallies the result. The game lasts for as many rounds as there are players at the table, and the player with the lowest total score wins.
First released in 2007, Escalation! combines hand management, quick decisions, and rising numerical challenges in a compact format. Every play can shift the pressure, making the choice to push higher or gather the pile a central part of the game.
