About this board game

Niwashi is a cooperative two-player game that takes about 40 minutes to play, challenging partners to build a garden together with limited communication.

The aim is to achieve as many objectives as possible by placing garden tiles on top of one another. Each tile is divided into three plots in different colours, representing the four seasons or sand. As the garden grows, the players must reveal and complete shapes of a single colour without knowing exactly what those shapes are.

Communication is deliberately restricted, so every placement becomes a shared deduction challenge. Players must interpret the developing garden and anticipate what their partner may be trying to complete. They can also play the lantern, placing it wherever and however they choose to provide the other player with a clue.

  • Cooperative gameplay designed exclusively for 2 players
  • Limited communication that makes each clue meaningful
  • Layered garden tiles with plots representing seasons or sand
  • Objectives based on revealing and completing coloured shapes
  • A lantern that can be positioned to communicate an idea

The game ends when one player has no pieces left at the beginning of a round. Success depends on coordinating your plans while working within the information each player can access.

After several games, Niwashi offers a broader journey around Japan. This series of challenges introduces changing restrictions, such as limited playing areas and blocked plots. Gardeners can progress from one challenge to the next and attempt to complete them all, giving the shared garden-building puzzle a continuing sense of discovery.
