About this board game

Venice Connection is a two-player river-building and tile-placement game that takes about 10 minutes to play. Released in 1988, it challenges players to complete a canal in a loop using a shared set of 16 tiles.

Each tile has two possible canal sections: a straight section on one side and a bend on the other. All 16 tiles are available for either player to use, so the developing canal is shaped by both players throughout the game.

On your turn, place between one and three tiles. The tiles you place must form a straight line and be connected adjacent to at least one tile already in play. The only exception is the first turn, when the tiles are simply placed on the table.

  • Two players
  • 16 identical tiles, each with a straight section on one side and a bend on the other
  • Approximately 10 minutes of play
  • A goal of completing the canal in a loop

The key moment comes when one player recognizes that the canal is now impossible to complete. That player says “impossible” to the opponent who placed tiles on the previous turn, challenging them to finish the canal alone.

If the challenged player can complete the canal, they win. If the canal cannot be completed, the player who called “impossible” wins. This creates a distinctive contest of shared construction and timing: every placement changes the available path, while an incorrect challenge can hand the victory to the other player.

With its compact tile set, short playing time, and clear win condition, Venice Connection focuses the entire game on building—and recognizing—the completed loop.
