About this board game
Wind River is a strategy game for 3–4 players, played in about 60 minutes, in which each player leads a Native American tribe across the great plains of North America.
Before European settlers arrived, Native Americans lived in harmony with the buffalo herds. In Wind River, the herds are central to your tribe’s journey, guiding where you should establish your tipis and how you plan your progress across the plains.
Your goal is to place tipis near the buffalo herds so they can support your tribe. This support becomes increasingly difficult to maintain as the game progresses, making the movement of the herds an important part of every decision.
Staying close to the buffalo is vital. As long as buffalo remain near your tipis, your tribe can be maintained—but if you fall behind the herd migration, your position becomes harder to sustain. Watch the herds carefully and continue moving forward across the plains.
- Lead a tribe across the great plains of North America.
- Place tipis near buffalo herds for support.
- Manage the growing challenge of maintaining your tribe.
- Keep pace with the migrating herds.
At the end of the game, the winner is the player with the most tipis that have traversed all the way across the plains. This creates a clear race from one side of the landscape to the other, while the shifting buffalo herds determine how successfully each tribe can continue.
Released in 2008, Wind River combines tribal leadership, tipi placement, buffalo migration, and an increasingly demanding journey into a focused game about keeping pace with the herds. Plan your route carefully, maintain your tribe, and strive to bring the greatest number of tipis across the plains.
