About this board game

Canalis is a 2–4-player tile-laying and card-drafting game about building a new district in the city-state of Tempest, with games lasting about 45 minutes.

In the wake of a storm, a new area near the city-state has opened for development. Each player leads a faction seeking to establish power there by arranging canals and placing buildings in ways that provide the greatest benefit.

Use card drafting and tile laying to shape the district. Place canals to connect your buildings with valuable resources and the harbor, while ensuring that the peasantry looks to your faction for employment.

  • Draft cards and lay tiles to develop the new district.
  • Connect buildings to resources and the harbor with canals.
  • Place scenic gardens to improve the prestige of your work.
  • Use building placement to affect the views of opponents.
  • Pursue secret missions that keep the final result uncertain.

Development is not only about practical connections. Scenic gardens can enhance the prestige of your work, while a strategically placed Senate Annex may look especially pleasing when it completely blocks the view of an opponent’s building.

Every player also has a secret mission, keeping the outcome in doubt until the last card is played. In Canalis, the district’s canals, resources, buildings, gardens, and harbor connections all contribute to the struggle for influence in Tempest.
