About this board game
St-Lô: Normandy 1944 – The Breakout Begins is a battalion-level World War II wargame for 1–2 players, with play taking approximately 360 minutes. Designed by Joe Balkoski, it offers a detailed simulation of the battle for St-Lô and the desperate combat surrounding this pivotal Normandy engagement.
Unit morale is central to every decision. Morale changes as units move, rest, or attack, forcing commanders to judge whether a battalion should be pulled out of the line to recover or pushed forward for one more attempt to take a position.
Artillery is equally important, but effective fire depends on good observation posts. Players may find themselves fighting fiercely for hilltop vantage points and church steeples, turning the control of key locations into a crucial part of the battle.
An innovative movement system adds uncertainty to the battlefield. You never know which unit will move next, and even a unit that has already acted may move again during the same turn. Planning ahead, resting troops, and launching an unexpected offensive are all part of the challenge.
- Morale fluctuates through movement, rest, and attacks.
- Artillery requires effective observation posts.
- Uncertain movement creates unpredictable turn sequences.
- Designed for both two-player and outstanding solitaire play.
St-Lô includes extensive designer’s notes throughout its rulebook, along with numerous quotations from commanders at the battle. The 1986 game comes with a 22-by-34-inch paper map of St-Lô and surrounding areas, 400 multicolor, back-printed counters, a rulebook, and player-aid cards.
