About this board game

BattleFleet Mars: Space Combat in the 21st Century is a two-player simulation of interplanetary conflict in the late 21st century, with games lasting about 120 minutes.

Earth depends on extraterrestrial resources, while privately owned conglomerates manage, execute, and control their procurement. The conflict begins when disenchanted employees living in space and on Mars attempt to seize the means of production and gain autonomy.

The Solar system is not a static battlefield. Relative planetary positions are tracked from turn to turn, changing the travel times between planets during play. Planning an operation therefore involves more than choosing where to fight: the movement of the planets directly affects how long it takes forces to reach their destinations.

Success also depends on maintaining a balance between combat and political considerations. Players must continue the conflict while keeping the citizens on their side, creating a challenge that combines military action with the need to sustain public support.

  • Two-player interplanetary conflict simulation
  • Turn-by-turn planetary positions that affect travel times
  • Political considerations alongside military operations
  • 400 counters
  • Two combat options: a simplified chart system or ship-to-ship play in 3D space

Combat in BattleFleet Mars can be resolved using the streamlined chart system, or players can play out individual engagements ship to ship in 3D space. This gives the conflict two distinct levels of resolution while keeping the focus on the struggle for autonomy across the Solar system.

Released in 1977, BattleFleet Mars presents a science-fiction conflict shaped by changing planetary positions, resource dependence, corporate control, and the political demands of a population caught in an interplanetary uprising.
