About this board game

Tablut is a traditional two-player tafl game played on a 9×9 grid, with a listed playing time of approximately 45 minutes. One player controls the Shields, while the other controls the Swords.

The two sides have contrasting objectives. The Swords player must try to capture the Chief Shield. The Shields player must instead clear a safe path so the Chief Shield can escape off the board.

• Swords: Attempt to capture the Chief Shield.
• Shields: Create a safe route for the Chief Shield to leave the board.
• Movement: Pieces can move any number of spaces in a straight line.
• Capture: A piece is captured when bracketed on two opposite sides by opponent pieces.

With its open-grid movement and opposing goals, Tablut centers on positioning pieces for attack while protecting the Chief Shield’s route to safety. Every move can contribute either to the attempt to surround the opposing target or to the effort to keep an escape path clear.

The game was originally recorded by Linnaeus in Lapland in 1732. BoardGameGeek data lists its release year as 1700, reflecting its place among traditional tafl games.
