About this board game

18Svea is a fast, compact 18XX railway game for 2–3 players, with an approximate play time of 120 minutes. Set in central Sweden from 1850 onward, it challenges railroad entrepreneurs to establish companies, expand their networks, and build wealth through clever investment.

The game takes place on a map containing only ten hexes, creating a focused setting where every decision can have a meaningful impact. Five fictional train companies, each based in a different Swedish city on the map, compete to develop rail connections, establish stations, operate trains, and generate money for their shareholders.

A complete game follows a fixed structure of four Stock Rounds and seven Operations Rounds. During Stock Rounds, players manage their private investments in the available train companies. During Operations Rounds, the companies develop their rail networks, run trains, and distribute the resulting financial rewards to shareholders.

  • Players: 2–3
  • Play time: approximately 120 minutes
  • Map: ten hexes centered on central Sweden
  • Companies: five fictional train companies
  • Strategy cards: twelve cards that help make each game different

Although 18Svea includes a shuffled strategy-card deck and may use a single die roll when determining an off-board connection, luck plays a small role. Players instead rely on planning, competition, and the ability to anticipate and outmaneuver one another from the first round onward.

At the end of the game, the player with the greatest combined wealth in money and company shares wins. Inspired by the 18XX games originally developed or inspired by Francis Tresham, 18Svea delivers a streamlined railway investment and operations experience in a small map and a brisk format.
