Abstract Academy

About this board game

Abstract Academy is a competitive pattern-building game for 2–4 players, played over three rounds in about 40 minutes. As art students, you compete for top marks while sharing a canvas with your rivals.

Each round begins with 2–3 scoring cards displayed for everyone to see, revealing the patterns that can earn points. Every player also receives an inspiration card showing a personal pattern they are trying to create on the canvas.

Players take turns adding canvas cards to a shared play area. In a two-player game, the area is 4×4; with four players, it is 5×5. Each canvas card is divided into quadrants colored yellow, red, or blue, letting the artwork grow organically as players build the shared design.

• The edges remain flexible until four or five cards form a complete row or column.
• Your nearest edge becomes your home row once the canvas size is locked.
• Other players cannot place cards in your home row unless every other space is filled.

When the canvas is complete, the two rows nearest you form your scoring zone. Compare the color patterns in each player’s zone: whoever completes a scoring card better than the others claims it. You can also score your inspiration card if your zone contains its required pattern.

With shared spaces, changing boundaries, public scoring goals, and private inspirations, every placement affects the developing canvas. After three rounds, the player with the most points becomes the star pupil of Abstract Academy and wins.
