About this board game

Diskwars is a fantasy miniatures wargame without miniatures for 2–8 players, with battles lasting about 90 minutes. Released in 1999, it uses double-sided cardboard disks to represent armies, terrain, spells, missiles, and starting homelands.

Choose from eight factions in the base game: Elves, Uthuk Yllan, Dwarves, Undead, Knights, Acolytes, Dragon kin, and Orcs. Set an army point value, then build a force with at least half its points coming from one faction. The remaining points can come from like-aligned or neutral disks and spells.

  • Unit disks show alignment, attack, defense, toughness, movement, army point cost, and special abilities.
  • Terrain disks such as forests, ruins, and swamps affect combat and line of sight.
  • Spells and missiles add magical effects and ranged attacks, including arrows, bolts, boulders, and fireballs.

Players take turns activating up to three units. Disks move by being flipped end over end, up to their movement value. When one lands on an opposing disk, combat begins, with the top disk attacking the one beneath it. Damage is compared with toughness to determine whether units are wounded or killed, and stacked battles are resolved from top to bottom.

Missile attacks use a physical drop: a missile disk is released from a foot above the table toward a target within range. A successful hit deals damage, while a miss can strike another disk—including a friendly unit—creating an element of luck and dexterity.

Multiple scenarios support objectives ranging from holding a central position to eliminating the opposing army, accommodating a wide variety of combat conditions. In Diskwars, battlefield movement, faction building, special abilities, and hands-on attacks combine in a flexible fantasy battle system.
