About this board game
Ring of Fire: The Fourth Battle for Kharkov, August 1943 is an operational simulation for 1–2 players of the two-week battle for Kharkov, with a listed playing time of 600 minutes and an official estimate of 4–10 hours.
From August 3 to August 16, 1943, three Russian Army Fronts launch an offensive to retake Kharkov. The Russian player drives against dug-in German forces, seeking to capture as much of the map as possible and exit units in a breakthrough. The German player must respond quickly, moving fire brigades of panzers and infantry to reinforce threatened sectors, plug gaps, and cut off advancing Russian forces.
One of the game’s defining features is its tank combat system. Adjacent armored units can exchange fire before the more traditional odds-based Combat Results Table phase, creating a distinct tactical edge for German forces—provided the Russians do not concentrate too much armor against them at once.
Reserve rules give both sides ways to react to attacks and exploit holes in the opposing line. Airpower can interdict reserves, making the timing and placement of those missions important to a successful operation.
