About this board game

Dunkirk: France 1940 is a 1–2-player block wargame with an approximately 180-minute playing time, covering the German invasion of France and the Low Countries in May and June 1940.

Before play begins, the German player selects a strategy card outlining goals to achieve for victory. The Allied player seeks to prevent those goals from being reached, creating a clear opposing structure for the game’s campaign.

Each side has a hand of cards that can influence battles, reinforcements, and other events that occurred or might have occurred during the campaign. The game is not card-driven; instead, cards enhance the main system while adding possibilities to the action.

  • Block wargame covering the 1940 invasion
  • Strategy cards establish German victory goals
  • Cards affect battles, reinforcements, and other elements
  • Chit-driven activation for larger German and Allied commands

The German and Allied armies are organized into their larger commands. Command chits are placed in a cup, and players draw them during the game turn. When a chit is drawn, that command becomes active for movement and combat, determining which forces can act at that moment.

At the end of the game, victory depends on the German player’s ability to fulfill the selected strategy-card objectives. The Allies win by preventing those objectives from being achieved. Designed by Doug Bryant and developed through more than two years of design and playtesting, Dunkirk: France 1940 offers a focused way to revisit a pivotal 1940 campaign through command chits, card-enhanced play, and opposing strategic aims.
