About this board game

Thirty Years War Quad (Second Edition) is a historical battle game for 1–2 players with an approximate playing time of 180 minutes, released in 1995. It presents four separate battles from the Thirty Years War, each using its own map, counters, and exclusive rules.

The game combines a shared foundation of Standard Rules with scenario-specific material for every battle. This second edition updates the original SPI first edition from 1976 and replaces Freiburg with White Mountain.

  • Lützen: Count Von Wallenstein is caught with part of his Imperialist Army dispersed after failing to anticipate Gustavus’ resolve. The Swedes achieve a major victory, although Gustavus does not survive the battle.
  • Nördlingen: The armies of Spain and the Holy Roman Empire join forces to besiege an important city near the Danube.
  • Rocroi: Spain invades French territory in an effort to knock France out of the war, laying siege to the fortress of Rocroi.
  • White Mountain: The Catholic League Army, commanded by Maximilian of Bavaria and Count Tilly, defeats the Bohemians outside Prague on November 9, 1620.

Each battle offers a distinct historical setting while remaining part of the same four-game collection. From the Swedish victory at Lützen to the decisive Bohemian Phase battle at White Mountain, the scenarios cover different moments and opposing forces within the wider conflict.

With four maps, multiple sets of counters, shared rules, and exclusive rules for each scenario, Thirty Years War Quad (Second Edition) is designed for players interested in comparing pivotal battles from one of Europe’s major wars.
