About this board game

Gazala: The Cauldron is a two-player wargame simulating the mobile portions of the Battle of Gazala in Libya from May 27 to June 14, 1942. Games use one-day turns and a scale of one mile per hex, with units ranging from battalions to regiments.

The game captures a fluid desert campaign in which an Axis attack meets a furious Allied counter-attack before developing into a grinding battle of attrition and maneuver. The historical battle ultimately ended in a massive Axis victory, but each play can unfold differently because both sides face uncertainty throughout the action.

Formations activate randomly, creating an unpredictable rhythm of movement and combat. Each turn provides a varying number of activations, representing supply levels, command confusion, fatigue, and intelligence. This produces an ebb and flow in which either side can become dominant at different times.

  • Formation-based random activation for uncertainty and high replayability
  • Fatigue and reduced defensive preparation after movement
  • Minefields, airpower, and anti-tank capabilities
  • A focused treatment of the armor-versus-infantry conflict
  • Two scenarios with high solitaire playability

After units move, their strengths are reduced to model fatigue and a lack of defensive preparation, making well-timed counter-attacks a key part of play. The rules aim to model major battlefield pressures in a simple and effective way while preserving the importance of maneuver and timing.

Gazala: The Cauldron includes a 17 × 22-inch full-color map, 168 counters, a 12-page rulebook, and a player aid card. Scenarios take approximately 3–7 hours, and players need to provide one 10-sided die. The game was released in 2013.
