About this board game

Midway is a two-player naval search-and-strike game played over approximately 240 minutes, with each player tracking the action on a concealed map of the Midway Island area.

Each side begins by searching for the enemy fleet. Players send search planes to hexes and call out the hex numbers, attempting to locate opposing ships hidden behind the other player’s screen. Once a fleet is found, bombers can be dispatched to attack it.

Attacks are resolved on a separate battle board. Ships are placed on hexes, while attacking aircraft are positioned to show which ship each plane is targeting. This creates a distinct transition from the hidden search game to the open resolution of a strike.

The basic game is simple to learn, while additional rules add realism and complexity for groups wanting a deeper engagement. These options expand the tactical possibilities beyond the core search-and-attack framework.

  • CAP fighters add defensive aircraft to the conflict.
  • Surface actions provide another way for opposing forces to engage.
  • Bases and inaccurate search reports introduce further considerations.

For true double-blind play, Midway is best supported by a neutral referee. The game includes 204 counters, five of them blanks, and is designed specifically for two players. Its hidden information, search reports, and separate battle board make every sighting and attack an important moment.

Very similar to Guadalcanal, Midway offers a layered experience: approachable rules at its core, with optional systems that reward players who want more detail and complexity in their naval engagements.
