About this board game
Panzer Grenadier: The East Front is a two-player World War II tactical game of platoon-level combat, with sessions lasting approximately 120 minutes. Released in 1998, it is the first volume in a series focused on combined-arms actions during the German invasion of Soviet Russia.
Set from June 22, 1941, through the first few months of the invasion, the game recreates fast-paced actions on the Eastern Front. Players direct mechanized, motorized, towed, and foot platoons while field commanders from Corporal to Lieutenant Colonel influence the battle.
Its moderate complexity is supported by realistic, easy-to-understand mechanics. Opportunity Fire, Combined Fire, friendly fire, Mobile Assault, Leadership, Morale, and Spotting all shape tactical decisions, while terrain and battlefield preparation introduce additional challenges.
- Special rules cover Digging In, Entrenchments, Hidden Units, Minefields, and Bunkers.
- Special unit types include Headquarters, Aircraft, Armored Trains, Cavalry, and River Vessels.
- Units represent platoons and individual field commanders, with MG, heavy weapons, anti-tank, anti-aircraft, and other combat units included.
- Optional rules add Consolidation, Excess Initiative, Random Events, and Strategic Movement.
Each hex spans 200 meters from side to side, and every game turn represents 15 minutes of combat. The 495 counters depict forces ranging from infantry platoons of 15–40 men to mechanized formations with 3–5 tracked vehicles, while motorized and towed units include trucks, men, and weapons.
With good solitaire suitability and a strong emphasis on tactical coordination, Panzer Grenadier offers a focused simulation of early-war Eastern Front combat. Two six-sided dice are required to play.
