About this board game
Caesar’s Gallic War is a two-player strategic-level block board wargame about Julius Caesar’s conquest of Gaul from 58 to 51 BC, with games lasting around 180 minutes.
One player commands the Romans, while the other leads the Gauls. Both sides compete for control of the various Gallic tribes, using cards to recruit allies, move units, launch attacks, and trigger events.
- Block-based forces and area movement create a strategic contest across Gaul.
- Cards support recruitment, movement, attacks, and events.
- Julius Caesar, Vercingetorix, and Ariovistus appear as notable leaders.
The Gauls begin with fewer and weaker units, but they have an easier time bringing additional tribes to their side. When Vercingetorix appears, the Gallic player gains an important leader and must decide whether to confront Roman forces directly or rely on defensive play, raiding tactics, and political maneuvering.
The Romans start with six legions, with four more on the way. Their units are stronger and faster, but recruiting tribes is more difficult. Roman players must also manage the threat of rebellions while keeping a careful eye on their supplies.
With its opposing strengths and pressures, Caesar’s Gallic War presents an asymmetrical struggle in which military power, tribal allegiance, and timing all shape the fight for control of Gaul. Released in 2009, it is designed specifically for two players.
