About this board game

Racetrack is a 1973 paper-and-pencil car-racing game for 2–8 players, with a listed play time of 15 minutes. It simulates a race in an abstract manner using a track drawn on square graph paper.

On each turn, a player draws the movement vector for their car. The new vector can differ from the vector used on the previous move by only a certain amount—for example, 2 squares total. This limitation makes every movement part of an ongoing plan rather than an isolated decision.

Curves are especially important. A fair amount of planning is necessary to negotiate them safely, so the changing direction and length of each vector become central to navigating the drawn track.

  • Format: paper and pencil
  • Players: 2–8
  • Play time: 15 minutes
  • Core mechanic: drawing movement vectors with limited change from the previous move

With its simple materials and focused movement rule, Racetrack turns a sheet of graph paper into an abstract racing challenge. Its origins are unknown, but the game has inspired several others, including Motor Speed, Tacara, Bolide, Triplanetary, Breakneck Blitz, Generic Racing Game, VektoRace, and Grid Race.

For players interested in planning, vectors, and careful curve negotiation, Racetrack offers a compact race simulation built from drawing, constraint, and foresight.
