About this board game
Bloody Roads South: The Battle of the Wilderness May 5-7, 1864 – The South’s Last Chance is a brigade-level American Civil War game for 1-2 players, with play times ranging from 4 to 30 hours. It is the fifth game in The Gamers’ Civil War Brigade Series and the first to use the 2nd Edition CWB rules.
Set during the Battle of the Wilderness, the game covers the opening clash of the coordinated campaign that continued from spring 1864 through spring 1865 and ended in a Union victory. The stakes are enormous: a Confederate victory could disrupt the Union’s master plan and send General Ulysses S. Grant back in disgrace. If Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia cannot prevail, the battle may mark the beginning of the end.
Bloody Roads South presents the engagement at a detailed operational scale. Each game turn represents 30 minutes, while each hex covers 200 yards and units represent brigades. The game offers high solitaire playability, making it suitable for solo study as well as two-player sessions.
- Two 22 x 34-inch full-color maps
- Two double-sided countersheets with 560 half-inch counters
- 28-page Civil War Brigade Series 2nd Edition system rulebook
- 16-page Bloody Roads South-specific rulebook
- Two six-sided dice
With a medium complexity level and a substantial playing time, Bloody Roads South is built for players who want to explore one of the Civil War’s pivotal confrontations through the CWB system. Its brigade scale, extensive map area, and strong solitaire suitability make it a focused treatment of the Wilderness campaign’s decisive opening days.
