About this board game
Bemused is a 30-minute card game for 4–6 players in which each player guides a muse seeking to elevate a chosen human virtuoso to celebrity and influence.
To advance your protégé, you must undermine rival virtuosos with doubt and dread. Each turn, draw two doubt cards, play a doubt or dread card onto a virtuoso, then discard a card from your hand. Some plays let you place two doubt cards at once, but permanently reduce your hand size.
Every virtuoso has a unique ability, such as changing dread into doubt or moving doubt between characters. With hidden goals, asymmetric powers, and a “take that” environment, Bemused rewards strategic timing as much as shameless table talk, bluffing, scheming, and deal-making. It is a social interaction game rather than a social deduction game.
- Drive rivals insane: five combined doubt and dread cards push a virtuoso into insanity, restricting which cards they can play.
- Turn dread into danger: an insane virtuoso with more dread than doubt dies and becomes a fantasma haunting the survivors.
- Pursue hidden objectives: each protégé has a secret gemina and a secret describing how that relationship affects your final score.
A revealed gemina grants access to another ability, but revealing one may come at a price. When a virtuoso becomes insane, their gemina flips automatically and can create severe consequences for the game.
Even an insane virtuoso—or a dead virtuoso transformed into a fantasma—may still win. Manage your hand, exploit character abilities, conceal your priorities, and decide when cooperation serves your own path to victory in Bemused.
