About this board game

A Spoiled Victory: Dunkirk 1940 is a solitaire game for one player, designed for a 60-minute experience, about the Allied rescue operation from May 27 to June 4, 1940.

Approximately 400,000 Allied troops from Belgium, France, and England were surrounded near Dunkirk by German forces. England launched Operation Dynamo hoping to rescue 30,000 men; instead, 330,000 were evacuated. Your goal is to guide the Allied forces and try to recreate that historical result.

Each turn is shaped by an Event card. These cards determine where the Luftwaffe strikes, how many units can evacuate, how the German army moves, and how many actions you have available. The changing conditions force you to manage the rescue operation under pressure.

  • Point-to-point movement: Allied units can move between any two connected points.
  • German movement: German forces can move only along designated tracks.
  • Evacuation: Move Allied forces to the beach, convert them into evacuee units, and sail them to England.
  • Continuing danger: Evacuees may still be hit by artillery or Luftwaffe strikes until they arrive safely in England.

Success depends on balancing movement, available actions, evacuation capacity, and the threats directed by the Event cards. The rescue is not complete when units reach the beach: they must survive the journey to England.

At the end of the game, your score is based on the total number of evacuees rescued, with victory points awarded accordingly. A Spoiled Victory: Dunkirk 1940 is won by matching or exceeding the historical result of 330,000 rescued.
