About this board game
Catchphrase is a phrase-guessing board game for 2–4 players with a 60-minute play time.
Each player has a common phrase that the other players try to guess. Rather than offering unrestricted clues, the game uses a spinner to determine what information can be revealed about the phrase.
Spinner directions focus attention on the phrase’s structure and letters. Depending on the result, players may receive clues about:
- How many words are in the phrase
- How many letters are in a word
- What letters might make up a word
Answers are tracked on a board featuring spaces for details such as the number of letters and the letters themselves. This gives the guessing process a clear, organized record as players work with the available information.
The game’s appeal comes from gradually narrowing down a familiar expression through focused clues. Every spin directs attention to another aspect of the phrase, creating a structured way to search for the answer without revealing it all at once.
Released in 1974, Catchphrase offers a dedicated board game take on phrase deduction. It should not be confused with the separate party game Catch Phrase!.
