About this board game
Montgolfière is a balloon-racing game for 2–6 players, with an approximate playing time of 45 minutes. Each player attempts to fly their balloon as high as possible while managing a distinctive set of cards and choosing the right moment to act.
Every player begins with an identical collection of cards, selects a random subset, and adds one card each turn. Higher cards make upward movement more likely, but simply climbing is not the only way to gain an advantage. The game rewards careful timing and opportunistic plays.
- Ballast: Dump it at the right opportunity to help your balloon rise.
- Grappling hooks: Link your balloon to another balloon.
- Soporific gas: Knock out balloons below you.
- Super motor: Add another powerful option to your flight.
- Tempest cards: Reverse the course of play and disrupt expectations.
The highest balloon is never entirely safe. Storms can defeat the leaders, while carefully timed interference can change the relative positions in the sky. These effects make each card choice matter, whether you are pushing upward or trying to prevent a rival from taking the lead.
Montgolfière also offers a challenge against the non-player Black Baron. The Black Baron is known to win from time to time, even when playing randomly, creating an unpredictable opponent alongside the human players.
Released in 1992, this game combines card selection, rising fortunes, direct interaction, and sudden reversals into a contest where bold flight and tactical timing are equally important.
