About this board game

White Eagle Defiant: Poland 1939 is a 1–2 player wargame about the German, Slovak, and Soviet invasion of Poland, with an average play time of 90 minutes. Set during the September Campaign of 1939, it recreates the opening campaign of the Second World War, from the German invasion on September 1 through the campaign’s end on October 6.

One player commands the Germans, Slovaks, and Soviets, simplified as the Germans in the game, while the other leads the Polish forces. The German player must capture Warsaw and other designated Victory cities while preventing Polish forces from destroying forts in East Prussia or recapturing Victory cities. Winning quickly matters: completing these objectives in less time than the historical campaign secures a German victory, while slower results can produce a draw or a Polish win.

The game uses a point-to-point map and a chit pull system, with each turn representing four days. Random event chits add variety, including weapons and actions such as armored trains and aerial bombardment. Enhanced combat rules represent mechanized warfare and allow forces from adjacent spaces to join an attack as primary and secondary combat groups.

  • Panzers: German panzer units can roll two dice instead of one.
  • Cavalry: Polish cavalry can make a “first shot” at the start of a combat round.
  • Victory Point track: German success influences when Soviet forces enter and can create the possibility of an Allied attack in the West.
  • Blitzkrieg breakdown track: German army group activation can carry a risk of breakdown, with five breakdowns causing an automatic loss.

Following the mechanics of Brave Little Belgium while adding modest complexity, White Eagle Defiant offers a quick-playing and asymmetric struggle shaped by timing, battlefield pressure, and dangerous operational decisions.
