About this board game

Arriala: Canal de Garonne is a 2010 board game for 2–4 players, with a play time of about 30 minutes. Set in the reign of Louis XIV, it invites players to relive the construction of the canal between Grisolles and Valence d’Agen in the Tarn-et-Garonne.

Each player takes the role of an engineer seeking to build the greatest length of the Arriala—the Occitan word for canal—using their best workers. Workers can all be moved during the game, but only workers on your team earn fame points when canal sections are completed.

Worker placement is crucial. When a stretch of canal is finished, the player with the most workers there gains the advantage. The position of your workers matters, and ties are broken in favour of the player placed third.

  • Build canal sections between Grisolles and Valence d’Agen.
  • Move workers and compete for majorities when construction is completed.
  • Construct locks to alter existing sections and create new ones.
  • Build structures for points, at the cost of a worker for the rest of the game.
  • Cultivate the region’s famous vines for valuable end-game points.

Locks offer a tempting way to change the developing canal and claim a majority, but the points awarded depend on the length of the section. This creates an important choice: a lock may secure control, yet its value must be weighed against the section’s size.

Structures provide another route to points, although each one sacrifices a worker, with a maximum of five workers available per player. Meanwhile, expertise in cultivating vines can bring valuable points at the end of the game.

In Arriala: Canal de Garonne, timing, positioning, and carefully judged construction decisions shape your reputation as an engineer.
