About this board game

Lightning: North Africa on to Tobruk! is a two-player, 30-minute card-driven game about Erwin Rommel’s campaigns across the deserts of North Africa from 1941 to 1943.

Players use cards to represent the military units, supply convoys, and objectives of the historic campaign. Success depends on more than combat power: you must weigh maneuver options, plan carefully, and manage your supply situation while pursuing your objectives.

The game brings the theater’s distinctive forces and challenges to the table, including the Afrika Korps, the Desert Rats, Tobruk, Malta, anti-tank guns, resupply from Europe, and minefields.

  • Card-based representation of units, convoys, and objectives
  • Combat shaped by firepower, maneuver, and planning
  • Supply considerations that influence your decisions
  • Opportunities to win through tactics, out-thinking, and bluffing

Lightning: North Africa on to Tobruk! uses a combat system in which maneuver and planning are as important as brute force. Its approach reflects the historical campaign, where smaller forces could defeat and rout larger ones through better tactics and planning.

Rather than relying solely on overwhelming firepower, commanders must look for ways to outmaneuver and deceive the opposition. This dynamic system places you in charge of one of the most famous theaters of World War II, with the game released in 2006 as part of the Lightning Game Series.
