Unconditional Surrender! Western Campaigns board game cover

About this board game

Unconditional Surrender! Western Campaigns is a strategic-level World War II wargame for 2 players, with approximately 240 minutes of play. It covers campaigns fought between the Axis and Western Allied factions in Western Europe across a selection of shorter, smaller-footprint scenarios.

Designed for players who want the Unconditional Surrender! system without the space and time demands of the larger Unconditional Surrender! World War 2 in Europe, this edition focuses on the big picture of force projection. Its compact presentation also makes it an alternative way to teach the design or take it somewhere else for a game.

The game uses monthly turns, with each hex representing 30 to 40 miles and each unit representing an army, fleet, or wing. Movement and combat are combined into a single activation, while one combat resolution sequence and Combat Results Table handles every type of combat, with different results for air and ground engagements.

  • Low counter density: The map remains easy to manage, with no more than one unit of the same type per hex.
  • Streamlined units: Counters do not show combat or movement factors.
  • Simple economics: The “use it or lose it” system relies on simple math and minimal record keeping.
  • Flexible design: Relatively simple mechanics make the game easy to modify.
  • Compatibility: Ground and air units, event markers, and the combat system are compatible with Unconditional Surrender! World War 2 in Europe.

With five 8.5-by-11-inch maps, one 8.5-by-22-inch map, 280 counters, nine scenarios, player aids, a faction card, rules, and two six-sided dice, Unconditional Surrender! Western Campaigns offers an ergonomically friendly way to bring a large-scale Western European campaign to limited gaming space.
