About this board game
Castellum: Maastricht is a historical strategy board game for 2–4 players, with an approximate play time of 45 minutes. Set in the Dutch city of Maastricht, it challenges players to defend the city walls across four historic sieges.
The game spans two hundred years of history, beginning at the start of the Eighty Years’ War and continuing through its conclusion, the French Expansion Wars and the Napoleonic era. Each era brings a new opportunity to gather resources, collect cards and plan an effective defence before the enemy attacks.
- Build the defences you have claimed.
- Hire the soldiers you have claimed.
- Collect the services of Maastricht’s great churches.
- Prepare for sieges against progressively stronger enemies.
Players compete to defend the city walls as effectively as possible, while also influencing the actions of their opponents. By petitioning the churches, you can guide attacking forces toward an opponent’s section of the walls—or lure more influential attackers toward your own side.
These choices create a balance between preparation, positioning and competition for the most valuable opportunities. The attacking factions, the changing historical eras and the strengthening sieges give each stage its own character, while strategic planning remains essential throughout.
With its combination of resource collection, card play, construction, recruitment and tactical influence, Castellum: Maastricht offers a varied challenge rooted in the city’s history. Decide how to prepare your defences, manage the pressure of each era and guide the siege forces as you pursue the highest score.
