About this board game
Tornio ’44 is a historically accurate wargame for 1–2 players, with an approximately 600-minute playing time, about the battle between Finnish and German forces in Northern Finland from October 1–8, 1944.
One player commands the Finnish units while the other controls the German forces. The Finnish player must establish a strong bridgehead, seize the vital bridges at Tornio and Kemi in one piece, advance along the roads, and capture as many German prisoners as possible to satisfy the Allied (Soviet) Control Commission.
The German player faces the challenge of resisting the Finnish advance while emptying supply depots, organizing a retreat, and demolishing the vital bridges crossing the Tornionjoki and Kemijoki Rivers. Each side has a distinct operational task shaped by the historical situation.
Tornio ’44 combines a detailed historical setting with a range of special rules and systems. Fog of war, nighttime conditions, air strikes, and long-range indirect fire support add further considerations to battlefield decisions.
- Accurate orders of battle, historical summaries, and unit organizations
- A unique combat mechanism and long-range indirect fire support
- Hidden German alcohol depots and German prisoner rules
- Finnish naval landings at three possible locations
- Air strikes, nighttime rules, fog of war, and optional rules
With its focus on the towns of Tornio and Kemi, the game recreates a crucial confrontation during Finland’s 1944 conflict with German forces. Players must balance movement, combat, supply, bridges, and the consequences of retreat across a detailed historical scenario.
