About this board game

The Opulent is a light, cooperative asymmetrical game for 1–4 players, with a playing time of about 90 minutes. Set in Atlantic City during the 1920s, it places players in charge of a posh speakeasy operating under national Prohibition.

Each player takes on a distinct role that contributes to the nightclub’s success—or failure. Together, you must manage the club while catering to the recognizable social classes of the Jazz Age, including politicians, mobsters, aristocrats, and social celebrities.

Creating a memorable evening means balancing entertainment, refreshments, security, and staff. The Opulent jazz band can provide upbeat jazz or melodic waltzes, while patrons may be served an exotic mixed drink, whisky on the rocks, or a simple brew. Lookouts can help deter Federal Agents, and new hires and amenities can improve the club.

  • Cooperative play for 1–4 players
  • Asymmetrical roles with distinct contributions
  • A Prohibition-era speakeasy setting in Atlantic City
  • Ten scenarios covering the years 1920–1929

Every scenario has a dollar value representing the cost of operating the club for that particular year. To win a single-session game, players must have enough money in the club coffers to cover that cost. In the campaign, meeting the requirement allows the group to progress to the next scenario.

With its focus on theme and history, The Opulent combines the pressures of running an underground nightclub with a campaign spanning one of the most notable periods in United States history. Guide the club through the Roaring Twenties and see whether your operation can remain successful as the decade unfolds.
